Title Tags and Meta Descriptions, Written for People Who Are Scanning

A title tag decides whether your result gets clicked. A meta description decides whether the click feels justified. Both take minutes to fix and are wrong on most small sites.

A search result panel with title and description lines highlighted

Your title tag is the headline of your search result. Your meta description is the subtitle underneath it. Together they are a two-line advertisement you get to write yourself, and most businesses leave them on the factory setting.

Fixing them will not rescue a weak page. It will get a good page the attention it already deserves.

The shelf test

Imagine your result sitting on a shelf beside nine competitors. A shopper scans the row in about two seconds, reading only the first few words of each label.

Which label gets picked up? Not the one that begins with the shop's name. Every label has that. The one that names what is inside.

This is why brand-first titles waste your most valuable space. "TerraWell LLC | Services" spends the opening words on something the reader is not searching for.

Writing the title tag

Length. Roughly 50 to 60 characters. Longer titles get truncated, and the cut usually lands somewhere unhelpful.

Order. Lead with the specific subject. Put the brand at the end, separated by a pipe or dash, or leave it off entirely on deep pages.

Uniqueness. Every page gets its own. Duplicated titles across a site make it harder for search engines to tell your pages apart, and harder for a person to choose between them.

Honesty. The title must match what the page delivers. A title promising a guide that opens onto a contact form trains people not to trust you.

Writing the meta description

First, an important detail: the meta description is not a ranking factor. Search engines frequently rewrite it based on the query. So why bother?

Because when it is used, it decides whether the click happens. And a well written one is used more often than a vague one.

Length. About 140 to 160 characters. Front-load the point in case of truncation.

Content. Say what the reader will get and why it is worth their time. One concrete detail beats three adjectives.

Voice. Write to one person. "You" is fine. Marketing plural is not.

Weak: We offer a range of comprehensive SEO solutions designed to help businesses achieve their goals.

Better: A step-by-step audit checklist that shows what to inspect first, why it matters, and which findings are safe to ignore.

The mistakes that repeat everywhere

  • The template trap. A CMS pattern producing {Page} | {Company} | {Tagline} on every page, eating fifteen characters before the content starts.
  • Auto-generated descriptions. Pulling the first paragraph produces an orphaned half-sentence.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating the target phrase three times reads as spam to people and does nothing for machines.
  • Missing descriptions on important pages. Search engines will invent one from page text. Sometimes it is fine. Sometimes it is a navigation menu.

A ninety-minute pass

You do not need to review every URL. Sort pages by traffic and take the top twenty.

For each one, ask three questions: does the title name the specific subject in the first few words, is it unique across the site, and does the description give a reason to click that the competitor's does not?

Fix what fails. Note the date you made the change. Then check impressions and click-through rate in Search Console four weeks later, comparing against the four weeks before.

Click-through rate is the honest scoreboard here. Rankings can stay identical while clicks rise thirty percent, and that is exactly the outcome this work is designed to produce.
